Background

The e-Skills Academy was established in 2007 as a material contribution to the reconstruction and
transformation of South Africa by providing world class training opportunities, especially to
previously disadvantaged South Africans.
Established in collaboration with peer suppliers and technology users, including government
departments under the auspices of the Department of Communications, the academy is dedicated to
furthering the transformation and development objectives of the Presidential International Advisory
Council on Information Society and Development (PIAC).
Major players in the ICT industry have been invited to participate in the initiative, thereby making it
a truly independent, industry representative training organisation that is strongly positioned to
harness the collective strengths of the entire industry in the national interest.

Introduction

The e-Skills Academy of South Africa is a black-owned, independent training organisation focused
on the accelerated development of professional qualifications and “job-ready” skills in the
information and communications technology (ICT) sector.
The academy offers internationally accredited courses and certified qualifications that are designed to
meet carefully researched operational requirements that are defined by technology users throughout
both the private and public sectors of the South African economy as well as skills gaps in individual
organisations.
The e-Skills Academy goes beyond the transfer of knowledge and is committed to creating jobs and
career opportunities for graduates, as well as assist with the further development of skills for the
currently employed.

Programmes and Courses

The Academy provides multi-disciplinary, multi-technology and multi-vendor courses that are run in
collaboration with tertiary institutions, ICT vendors and major users of technology.
Students are engaged from three major sources:
• From among employers in the public and private sectors in accordance with skills
development requirements.
• From among universities and other tertiary educational institutions for postgraduate studies
and career specific tuition.
• School leavers for market and job-entry skills development.
Typical course configuration includes:
• Formal technology education programmes that are conducted over periods that extend from
one to three years and that culminate in the candidate receiving internationally recognised
certification as well as practical, “job-ready” experience.
• Short technology or management-specific intensive training.
• Support courses, including the development of “soft skills”.

All e-Skills Academy courses conform to leading international qualifications and accreditation
standards and are broadly divided into technical, non-technical and managerial disciplines, including
the following specialist fields:
• Software engineering
• Computer networking & security
• Project management
• Sales management
• Business skills
• Graduate Capacity Building Programme
• IT MBA
• Basic Computing

As a focused service provider in the field of ICT skills development and training, the e-Skills
Academy of South Africa has developed a comprehensive and integrated services portfolio that
complements the organisation’s educational programmes.

The services portfolio includes:
• The provision of expert consultancy and independent research to help private companies and
public enterprises to conduct organisational skills reviews, including skills gap analysis and
human resource planning.
• Based on the outcome of an organisational skills review, the academy will design a
customised skills development programme or recommend appropriate standard courses that,
once implemented, will enable the organisation to realise measurable productivity
improvements and enhanced efficiency throughout its ICT operations.
• The facilitation of bursaries and student loans for the benefit of deserving students.
• Large employers of ICT staff are secured as “placement targets” for academy graduates,
where fixed employment commitments are managed for the benefit of students and
employers.
